Li et al. identified genes encoding 15 putative aspartyl proteases in the commensal fungus Malssezia globosa . An unrooted phylogenetic tree (see Figure) reveals the degree of relatedness among these genes, as well as genes encoding other fungal proteases and selected mammalian aspartyl proteases. MgSAP1 cleaved the S. aureus virulence factor Protein A (SpA) and reduced biofilm formation. See the article on page 1137 and the related commentary (p. 1026) for more information.
