 3D reconstruction of the granular layers SG1–3 and surface rendering images of associated LGs.

Yamanishi et al. used focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy to assess the 3D structures of lamellar granules and the trans-Golgi network in human skin. Lamellar granules were reticular (white arrows) and fused with cell membranes in the SG1 layer, and vesicular (white arrowheads) and intracytoplasmic in the SG3 layer. In the SG2 layer, lamellar granules with both structures were observed. In this figure, lamellar granules related to distinct cells are of different colors. See the article on page 352 for details.
