Primary lesions of Merkel cell carcinoma contain variable numbers of tumor infiltrating T cells (TILs). Farah and coworkers characterized these TILs by assessing the heterogeneity and extent of representation of clonotypic T cell receptors. They determined that patients with abundant TILs that also exhibited clonal dominance (high Simpson’s Dominance index) had better outcomes than patients with few TILs and no dominant clones.
